Although not caring about what happens to the characters is no pre-requisite in this type of story it's pace is still too slow & a plain old documentary would probably have been more engaging.The mafia has often been romanticized through Hollywood, the image of gangsters and hard edged criminals have been shrouded in legendary status among filmgoers since The Godfather. Overall a good film, and one that deserves a watch.Wow, are they seriously still making Italian mafia films?
The film was a Franco-Italian-American co-production made by Pathé, SGC and Titanus. The teenagers know De Palma's "Scarface" by heart. "Gomorrah," which won the grand prize at Cannes 2008 and the European Film Award, is an enormous hit in Europe. The new moviegoing year just got one hell of a jolt.The sense of authenticity in this movie is palpable, but the scenes are sometimes so dark and so impenetrable that it takes a herculean effort to keep up with who's who and what's going on.Gomorrah manages to be artful without being arty.The violence here is all the more unnerving arriving as it does, as pro boxers say, like the punch you didn't see coming. Yes indeed people, this is one of "those" films, where everything drifts along in a dreamlike fashion, and for various reasons that I'll touch upon later, that means death for this film, even with the film having, if nothing else, the style to back up those ambitions of dreaminess.
The film is based on Roberto Saviano's 2006 best selling novel "Gomorrah," who personally documented his dangerous first-person journey, and to this very day lives under police protection.

I know it's a strange thing to say, partially because its plotlessness that has actually left many films of this type to be as weak as they are, but really, films like "Hunger", "Wings of Desire" and "Days of Heaven" all do what they set out to do and place style leaps and bounds ahead of substance, yet what we're left facing here is a more story-driven film, for although I joke about how this film doesn't have much plot to it, style and substance go hand-in-hand, and therein lays this film's death blow. Gomorra succeeds on many levels, and if you're looking for a very well acted movie that tells an unflinching story of crime, then this film is the one to watch. Don Ciro (Gianfelice Imparato) is a harassed bean-counter employed by the camorra to patrol the estate's grim walkways and dole out a grotesque sort of maundy-money to its various mendicants and pensioners: widows, the elderly, those who in general need to be kept pacified. The resulting war divides loyalties, and creates ruptures and fissions that discharge individual stories like jetsam.Marco (Marco Macor) and Piselli (Ciro Petrone) are two brash teenagers, obsessed with Brian de Palma's Scarface and with becoming local bosses themselves: a flukey success stealing cocaine at the very beginning emboldens them to draw attention to themselves with suicidally flashy behaviour. Only the young characters have much life in them. The cast do a fine job in their performances, and bring something unique to the screen.
